THERE’S MONEY IN UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

Create the case. Let your customers solve it.

It started with a girl called Holly Mercer.

In 1986, Holly checked into Room 17 of a seaside hotel.

Later that night, witnesses saw her leave.

She was never seen again.

Forty years later, a lost roll of film was discovered during renovations.

And the photographs suggested Holly had never left the hotel at all.

Except none of it really happened.

I created Holly.

I created the hotel, the suspects, the photographs, the police reports and the clues.

And I turned the whole thing into a printable cold case that people can buy, download and try to solve.

That’s the idea behind Cold Case Cash.

You create an intriguing cold case.

Your customer becomes the investigator.

They work through the evidence, spot the lies, break the alibis and try to figure out what really happened.

You create it once and can sell it again and again.

And with AI doing much of the heavy lifting, you don’t need to be a crime writer or spend weeks constructing every clue yourself.

I Built The System While I Built The Case

Creating the story was the easy part.

The difficult bit was making sure the mystery actually worked.

And I know a bit about constructing mysteries.

I’m a bestselling crime and thriller author with 14 published books behind me, including internationally published crime fiction.

Those are just some of my thousands of reviews you can see above.

I’ve spent years working out how to hide clues in plain sight, create believable suspects, plant red herrings and reveal the truth without cheating the reader.

And even with all that experience, the first version of The Girl in Room 17 failed my Case Cracker test.

Which showed me exactly why this system was needed.

Because if someone is paying to solve your case, the clues have to lead fairly to the answer.

So I developed a system that builds the mystery from the solution backwards, creates the evidence and then gives the finished case to a fresh AI investigator to see if it can solve it.

And that proved its worth immediately.

The first version of my case failed.

There was a hole in the evidence I hadn’t spotted.

I fixed it, tested the case again and this time it worked.

That process became Cold Case Cash.

Here’s How It Works

the author

Cold Case Cash takes you through the whole process, from your first idea to a finished printable mystery.

And you don’t even need the idea to begin with.

  1. FIND A CASE PEOPLE WILL WANT TO SOLVE

Start with the Case Finder.

Tell it the kind of mystery you want to create and it helps you find concepts with the right ingredients for a printable investigation.

Or simply choose one from the 50-Case Idea Bank included with Cold Case Cash.

Missing people.

Unsolved deaths.

Family secrets.

Inheritance mysteries.

Historical cases.

Heists and thefts.

Strange disappearances.

There are even cases where nobody gets murdered at all.

Pick the one that grabs you and start there.

2. BUILD THE MYSTERY BACKWARDS

This is where the Case Architect comes in.

Instead of throwing clues at a story and hoping they eventually add up, you work out exactly what happened first.

Who did it?

Why?

When?

Who lied?

What are they hiding?

What does the player need to discover?

And most importantly…

What evidence would actually prove it?

That gives you the structure for a mystery that can be solved rather than simply a story with a surprise ending.

3. CREATE THE EVIDENCE

Now the Evidence Builder turns that hidden story into the material your customer gets to investigate.

Depending on the case, that could include:

  • Police reports
  • Witness statements
  • Suspect interviews
  • Photographs
  • Letters and diaries
  • Receipts and tickets
  • Maps and floor plans
  • Newspaper reports
  • Telephone records
  • Hotel records
  • Financial documents
  • Forensic evidence

But you’re not adding documents just to make the file look bigger.

Each one has a reason to be there.

A receipt might destroy an alibi.

A photograph might prove somebody was somewhere they claimed they’d never been.

A witness statement might seem perfectly innocent until it’s compared with a telephone log.

The fun is in putting the pieces together.

You Get The Cold Case Cash Prompt Stack

Prompt 1: The Case Finder

Find a strong mystery idea with the potential to become a printable product.

Prompt 2: The Case Architect

Create the hidden truth, suspects, motives, timeline, lies, red herrings and proof chain.

Prompt 3: The Evidence Builder

Turn the mystery into the evidence your customer receives.

Prompt 4: The Case Cracker

Give your finished case to an independent investigator and see whether it actually works.

Prompt 5: The Evidence Designer

Plan how every piece of evidence should look.

Prompt 6: The Case Packager

Create the player briefing, worksheets, hints, solution and final product structure.

Prompt 7: The Listing Builder

Turn the finished case into a listing designed to help you sell it.

I developed these while building the system. These are the exact prompts I use.

Follow them in order and you have a complete process you can use again whenever you want to create another case.

And you can see exactly what the system can produce…

I didn’t want to give you a set of prompts and leave you wondering whether they actually worked.

So I’ve included the case I built while developing them:

THE GIRL IN ROOM 17

What’s Inside

You get the Worked Example, which takes you behind the scenes and shows you how the case was constructed.

And you get the finished investigation itself.

That means you can see the complete journey from the original idea…

To the hidden truth…

To the suspects and lies…

To the evidence…

To the Case Cracker test…

To the finished mystery.

The final investigation contains 33 numbered pieces of evidence.

So you have a complete example to refer to while you’re building your own.

NEED AN IDEA FOR YOUR FIRST CASE?

I’ve taken care of that too.

THE 50-CASE IDEA BANK

IMAGE: IDEA BANK MOCKUP

Inside are 50 cold case concepts you can start developing straight away.

Each gives you:

  • The era
  • The setting
  • The cold case hook
  • The fresh evidence that reopens the investigation
  • The kinds of evidence the finished game could contain

You’re not getting 50 finished plots that everybody else will create too.

They’re starting points.

Choose one and let the Case Architect turn it into your own mystery.

BONUS #1

THE COLD CASE EVIDENCE VAULT

120+ clues, records and evidence ideas for your mysteries.

At some point you’re going to know what you need the player to discover…

But wonder how on earth they could prove it.

That’s what the Evidence Vault is for.

Suppose you need to prove somebody left a hotel between 10.30 and 11.00.

You could use a petrol receipt.

A taxi record.

A photograph.

A telephone call.

A key log.

A train ticket.

A till receipt.

A staff sign-out sheet.

The Vault gives you more than 120 possibilities and shows you what each type of evidence can establish, what it could contradict and how it might be used for misdirection.

So instead of randomly adding another clue, you can find evidence that does the job your mystery actually needs.

BONUS #2

THE COLD CASE SERIES BUILDER

Because you don’t have to stop at one.

Once you’ve created your first cold case, you’ve also created something else.

A model you can repeat.

Your next case could have a completely different crime and setting while still appealing to the same customer.

You could create:

  • Hotel mysteries
  • Railway mysteries
  • 1980s cold cases
  • Missing-person investigations
  • Cases reopened by photographs
  • Historical mysteries
  • Your own fictional cold-case archive

Sell them individually.

Recommend the next case to people who bought the first.

Create themed collections.

Eventually bundle several together.

The Series Builder shows you how to turn one good case into the beginnings of a range without simply repeating the same mystery with different names.
